Thorsten Joachims, the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor of Computer Science and Information Science, was named interim dean of the Cornell Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science in January 2025.
Joachims is a leading figure in artificial intelligence (AI), particularly in the fields of machine learning and information access. His research focuses on machine learning methods that enable intelligent systems to learn from their human users in applications ranging from search and recommendation systems to large language models.
He joined the Cornell community in 2001 after finishing his Ph.D. in the AI unit of the University of Dortmund, where he also received a Diplom in Computer Science in 1997. At Cornell, he has held several leadership roles including department chair of information science, director of undergraduate studies in computer science, director of the Cornell AI Initiative, and the inaugural associate dean of research for Cornell Bowers CIS.
Working with his students and collaborators, Joachims has received eleven Best Paper Awards and four Test-of-Time Awards. He is a fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) and he was chosen as an inaugural member of the ACM SIGIR Academy. Joachims was selected as the ACM SIGKDD Innovation Award winner in 2020.
Joachims served as program chair of the International Conference on Machine Learning, the ACM Conference on Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD), and the ACM Conference on Recommender Systems (RecSys). Furthermore, he has served as an action editor for both the Journal of Machine Learning Research (JMLR) and the Journal of Artificial Intelligence Research (JAIR).
